[ORAL Practice] Better Value for MONEY

This is your first attempt of ORAL Practice.

The objective of the task is to make your thinking visible, by articulating your thought processes clearly and systematically. It also gives us opportunity to practise the use of mathematical terminology.

Your work should take into account the following:

  • Systematic working walkthrough
  • Description on how you approach the question
  • Elaborate why or how you do certain steps

Refer to the Handout given to you "Oral Practice".

You ONLY need to present the solution of ONE question of your choice in a clip (no longer than 3 minutes).

Upload your work in the padlet below.

To be completed by 15 Feb 2021 (Monday)

There are several ways you can record the clip.

  1. The simplest is to write your solution clearly on the paper; hold the camera above the paper; use a pen to point at the steps to guide the audience as you go through the steps.
  2. Alternatively, you may take an image of your solution and put in up in the presentation slide; organise the working slides in sequence; then explain how you approach the question. Below is an example:

When do we decide to report the exact figure, and when do we not?

(B) Different Reports of Covid-19 related figures

Let's take a look at the reporting of the spread of the Novel Coronavirus by the different news agencies:

[Gentle Reminder] International Math Contest

This is a gentle reminder to those who have not completed the International Math Contest, unless your parents have opted out in the contest. This is to help you in engaging and developing your higher-order thinking skills beyond the Mathematics core curriculum. Thank you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1] SST Students are invited to take part in the 2021 International Math Contest.

[2] The contest will be held online from 1 February to 7 February 2021. It is a 30-min online paper.

[3] The contest is free of charge (there is another option with payment, but students do not need to choose that)

[4] The official website is as follows: https://contest.rsmfoundation.org/StudentPortal/oly/registration

[5] Students will need their parents/guardians to set up an account for them on the website. Students are to type their full name for registration.

[6] On the day of the contest, students are to choose the appropriate papers (Grade 7 for Sec 1, Grade 8 for Sec 2, Grade 9 for Sec 3, and Grade 10 for Sec 4) and work on them without external help.

[7] Once their parents have received the details of the results via e-mail (e-certificate and ranking) around a week later, students are to take a screenshot of the results. Rename the screenshot to the class, index number and the name of the student (e.g. S2-09 08 Ang Tze Kiat) and deposit them in this Google Form.

This form will be closed on 26 February 2021 (Friday) 5 p.m. Late entries will be not entertained.

[8] An e-mail will be sent to the students acknowledging their entry. The contest will be registered as an enrichment activity in the CCA records of the respective student only when the screenshot has clearly stated the full name of the student.

[9] For queries, please contact Mr Samuel Lee at lee_tzi_yew_samuel@sst.edu.sg.

[Optional] Challenging Questions: 4 Operations with Rational Numbers

 This is an optional task

The objective of these questions is to stretch our thinking further to see how we can apply what we know into more complex scenarios
